Description
The Toika Liisa Floor Loom is available in weaving widths 80, 100, 120 and 150 cm (approx. 31 1/2″, 39 3/8″, 47 1/4″ and 59″).
We supply Liisa to the same specification whether as a traditional countermarch or as an ES electronic loom. Liisa can be supplied with a 16, 24 or 32 shaft ES electronic unit. It is also possible to convert a traditional countermarch Liisa and other makes of Scandinavian style looms to work with the ES system. Please get in touch if you would like more information.
As well as reading about Toika looms and perhaps watching the You Tube video link below you can also visit our Toika Loom Studio to see and try Toika table and floor looms. We have Laila set up with a top of the lamms tie up. Jaana and Eeva both with ES electronic systems as well as Leena and Siru, Toika’s table and rigid heddle looms. We don’t have a shop but no obligation visits are very welcome by appointment. We are based in Lutterworth, Leicestershire close to Junction 19 of the M1 and Junction 1 of the M6. Please get in touch to arrange to visit. We look forward to seeing you.
All Toika looms are made from beautiful Finnish birch. This hardwood is air and kiln dried before being made into looms. Eeva looms are supplied with a hanging beater and a standard Liisa bench. We include the cog wheel tensioning system as standard on the Eeva unless the customer requests otherwise. This means the weaver can advance the warp from the bench and adjust the tension to their exact requirements. We call this the “Goldilocks Tension System”. Available only on the Liisa and Eeva floor looms, the tension on your warp can be adjusted by millimetres instead of relying on a standard cog wheel only system. The connected worm gear means you; the weaver has infinite control over the tension meaning you can get the tension “just right”!
If you choose to order an ES loom, your loom will still look like a traditional Toika countermarch loom and will operate in exactly the same way. A true countermarch action creates a large shed but the difference is that there is no treadling required. The sleek aluminium box that houses the electronics sits on the top of the castle replacing jacks, lamms and treadles. A computer connection and small pedal changes the shed with a light tap of your hand or foot. The electronics understand the pattern you will have added to the software. Shafts that are programmed to lift, lift, those programmed to drop, drop giving a large clear shed without any need for additional moving parts or elaborate engineering. You will hear some folks say that it’s not handweaving! My answer is always “Yes it is” The weaver still has to wind the warp, dress the loom, thread the heddles, reed and finally throw the shuttle for every pick! Once you are weaving you will still need to wind on your warp, but you will almost certainly find that you are are refilling your bobbins sooner. The only difference is that there is no tying up or treadling involved, just a gentle tap of the pedal (smaller than a sewing machine pedal) at a speed you choose.
Toika looms need software to drive the loom. Toika ES looms operate with either Weavepoint (Windows only) or Fiberworks PCW (Windows or Mac operating systems) software. Both have drivers that will operate the ES system as well as being powerful design programmes. We don’t include software unless you order it with your loom. We can only supply Weavepoint for Windows with a built in Toika driver with our ES looms. In any event we strongly encourage prospective dobby loom customers to try out weaving software before buying a loom. All of the major weaving programmes are available to download and try free of charge. Usually the only features disabled are save and print.
Just like a traditional Liisa the side pieces of a Liisa are built in the factory and supplied in one piece. The loom is delivered in a plywood crate to accommodate this and ensures the loom arrives without damage. The simple and traditional construction of the looms means they are straightforward to build, exceptionally sturdy, and capable of weaving anything from fine lace to sturdy rugs and everything in between.

- Plywood crate and delivery to a UK mainland address
