Looms and Weaving

  • Extra shafts are moving when I treadle – what is wrong with my loom?

(Some of this answer also applies to looms with a Toika ES computer controlled dobby.)

Symptom: when treadling for a pick, extra shafts rise (or in some cases fall) unexpectedly.

    Possible causes:

    (1) You have threaded a warp end through a heddle on more than one shaft. Each warp end should pass through just one heddle.

    (2) Your unused heddles are bunched together and are lifting an adjacent shaft.

    (3) Your arrow pegs are snagging the Texsolv cord on an adjacent shaft and moving it too.

    (4) You have made a mistake in your treadle tie-up. Check which lamms move when you treadle.

    (5) The arrow pegs on your Texsolv cord are jamming between lamms and making them move together. If you are using the top-of-the-lamms tie up technique we recommend knotting the top end of each cord rather than using an arrow peg to stop it falling through the lamm hole.

    (6) ES looms only – check that the number of shafts for your ES unit is correctly set in the software – ES-16, ES-24 or ES-32.

  • I can’t turn the handwheel on the warp beam. How do I release it?

If your loom is fitted the the Toika cog wheel tension adjustment system you must disengage it by dropping the worm gear. You can find full instructions here:

How to drop the worm gear

Loom Control Software

  • I’m using Fiberworks to control my Toika ES but the picks are in reverse order. How do I fix this?

    There are two possibilities:

    (1) The “Reverse” button is depressed on the front of the ES unit. Press it again so that it pops out to return to normal (forward) weaving mode.

    (2) If you are using the ES-16 you have set the wrong “Max shafts” for your unit. Click on “Loom and port” then “Loom 1 Setup”. Set “Max shafts” to 16 and click OK to save the change. You an find more information in our Knowledge Base article.
